The Power of Our Vote: A Renewed Call to Action for Black Civic Engagement

In today’s political climate, the stakes for Black communities could not be higher. Across the nation, policies are being shaped that directly impact our economic opportunities, education, healthcare, and civil rights. Yet, despite these pressing issues, Black voter participation has seen a troubling decline in recent elections. This lack of engagement has consequences—consequences that affect our ability to influence the laws, leadership, and policies that govern our daily lives.

Historically, our ancestors fought tirelessly for the right to vote, enduring unthinkable hardships to secure this fundamental right.

Yet, too often, we take this power for granted. Disenfranchisement doesn’t just come from external forces seeking to suppress our vote—it also happens when we choose not to show up. Our collective silence allows others to dictate our future, leaving us without a seat at the table where decisions are made.

At Ohio Unity Coalition on Black Civic Participation, we refuse to accept this reality. We recognize that increasing civic participation is a responsibility we must embrace—not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come. Voting is not just about casting a ballot; it is about wielding power to demand policies that serve our communities. It is about ensuring that the voices of Black Ohioans are not just heard, but amplified.

That is why we are committed to making Ohio Unity Coalition on Black Civic Participation a hub for empowerment, organization, and action. This platform will serve as a space where we can share resources, organize for change, and build a unified movement dedicated to increasing voter turnout and civic engagement. Through education, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization, we will work to eliminate barriers to participation and ensure that every Black Ohioan understands the importance of their vote.
